OCR and document tools

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in a picture and gives them back as text you can select, search and edit. Image to text returns plain text or a searchable PDF, and JPG to Word builds an editable .docx from a photo or scan. Both accept PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF files up to 10 MB.

The group also covers describing pictures: the caption and alt text generators write a sentence about what a photo shows, and HEIC to PDF bundles iPhone photos into a document entirely in your browser. The OCR and caption tools run on our GPU server and delete files after 24 hours.

Popular uses

How to pick the right tool

You only need the words: Image to text

Best for screenshots, receipts, signs and short passages. Copy the text in one click, download a .txt file, or choose a searchable PDF.

You need to edit the layout: JPG to Word

Produces a .docx you can open in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs. Expect to fix formatting on complex layouts such as tables and columns.

Accessibility or SEO for a picture: Alt text generator

Writes a short description suited to an alt attribute. The Image caption generator gives a longer, more detailed sentence for captions and notes. Review both before publishing.

Photos to share as one file: HEIC to PDF

Converts HEIC photos into a PDF locally, one page per photo or one combined document, with no upload.

Getting a cleaner OCR result

Photograph the page straight on, avoid shadows and glare, and fill the frame with the text. Letters around 20 pixels tall or more read reliably. Check numbers and names; OCR works best on printed text, not handwriting.

Frequently asked questions

Does OCR work on handwriting?

It is built for printed text. Neat handwriting sometimes works, but results are unreliable, so check the output carefully.

Which languages can it read?

Many Latin-script languages and some others. Accuracy varies by language and font, so verify important results.

Can I upload a PDF?

Yes for Image to text and JPG to Word, within the 10 MB limit. HEIC to PDF creates PDFs but does not read them.

Is my document stored?

The OCR and caption tools upload the file to our server for processing and delete it automatically after 24 hours. HEIC to PDF runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
